Scored for conventional string ensemble, this piece is suitable for professionals groups, as well as amateurs of a high standard.

The narration - verses taken from Robert Browning’s “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” - is mostly between movements with a little dove-tailing into the music.

In addition there are a few occasions where the narration floats in over the music in the middle of a movement; however, the music is always quiet here, and amplification is not required for the voice.
